This book is produced using a hand-rubbed woodblock printing technique that has been practiced in Yunnan traditionally. Each image is created entirely by hand: artisans carve the woodblocks, apply ink, lay handmade multicolored paper over the surface, and press the image directly onto the page. Through this process, Jiama images are transferred onto paper, preserving both their visual form and their ritual significance.

The volume comprises 367 hand-printed sheets of Jiama prints, on hand made colored papers. The images reflect a wide range of themes, including Benzhu (local tutelary deities), nature spirits, and motifs associated with everyday life, protection, and the warding off of misfortune. Many of the prints derive from ancestral woodblocks that have been passed down through generations, maintaining iconographic traditions rooted in folk belief.

Paper Horse, is commonly known as Jiama paper. In Yunnan communities with strong traditions of ancestor worship, Jiama prints are burned during festivals such as Qingming, the Ghost Festival, and the Lunar New Year. Through ritual burning, these images are believed to connect the living with the spirit world, guiding ancestral souls and praying for peace and safety.
