Flying Tigers

The Flying Tigers were a group of American volunteer pilots who played a crucial role in supporting China before the U.S. officially entered World War II. Officially called the American Volunteer Group (AVG) and led by General Claire Lee Chennault, these pilots flew daring missions over the treacherous Himalayan route known as “The Hump.” Based in Kunming, their primary mission was to transport essential war supplies by air from India into China, bypassing Japanese-controlled territories after the Burma Road was cut off. They faced dangerous weather, high altitudes, and enemy attacks. The Flying Tigers’ courageous efforts ensured a vital lifeline of military equipment, medicine, and food reached Chinese forces fighting Japanese aggression. Their bravery and commitment symbolized international cooperation and had a lasting impact on the Allied war effort in Asia.
