A vivid chronicle of an adventurous hunting expedition through Central Asia—particularly the Himalayas and Mongolia—undertaken in the 1920s. The primary goal of the journey was to collect specimens of various game animals, including the Ovis Poli (Marco Polo sheep), ibex, and bear, for the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.

The expedition team included George K. Cherrie and Suydam Cutting, the author of The Fire Ox and Other Years. Since the only annual travel permit for the route through the Hunza Pass in the Himalayas had already been issued to two Dutch mountaineers, the team was forced to take the more arduous Leh-Karakoram route instead.

The book recounts their passage through rugged regions such as Kashmir, the Himalayas, Yarkand in Chinese Turkestan, Aksu, and the Tianshan mountains—often traveling at high altitudes under extreme conditions. Along the way, they encountered a range of cultures, including the native Kirghiz and Beks who joined their caravan. The chapters alternate between authors Theodore and Kermit Roosevelt, highlighting both their shared passion for adventure and their scientific dedication to the expedition.
