Located in Gongkar County, Shannan Prefecture, Tibet, Gongkar Chöde Monastery is a Sakya school monastery of Tibetan Buddhism. It serves as the ancestral temple of the Gongkar branch within the Sakya tradition and stands as a prominent spiritual center for the Sakya school in the Ü (Central) region. The monastery is adorned with a vast number of Buddhist murals. The main assembly hall and several other chapels within the monastery complex feature the works of the master painter Chöying Gyatso (also known as Chözé Chenmo), reflecting the exquisite artistry of this painting tradition and holding immense aesthetic value.

As a crucial surviving heritage of both Chöying Gyatso and the broader Chözé painting school, these monastery murals are undoubtedly a rare treasure in the history of Tibetan painting.
