Qutan Monastery in Qinghai is an important treasure of Ming Dynasty art and one of the most complete surviving examples of Tibetan Buddhist art.

From 2017 to 2020, the Institute for Tibetan Buddhist Art Research of the Palace Museum, in collaboration with the Qinghai Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, carried out a comprehensive digital documentation project of the monastery’s murals and collected extensive research materials. Based on this work,  Collection of Murals in Qutan Monastery systematically documents, restores, and interprets the monastery’s murals.

Volume 1: Historical Materials and Artifacts presents previously unpublished historical manuscripts of Qutan Monastery from private collections, along with historically significant artifacts preserved at the monastery.

Volume 2: Murals of the Qutan Hall showcases the magnificent murals of the Qutan Hall, accompanied by explanations of their iconography, artistic style, and historical background.

Volume 3: Murals of the Baoguang Hall offers a comprehensive presentation of the murals of the Baoguang Hall, together with analysis of their subject matter, artistic characteristics, and cultural context.

Fully illustrated in color photos, text in Chinese.
