• The Wild Flowers of Tibet, by Xu Feng Xiang & Zheng Wei Lie

The Tibetan Plateau is one of the world’s great centers of plant diversity. Shaped by extreme altitude, dramatic landforms, and powerful monsoon systems, its landscapes range from dry alpine barrens and cold highlands to deep river gorges and lush forested margins. Within these environments, Tibet has produced an extraordinary wealth of wild flowers, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth. This book brings together more than twenty years of field research to present a rich and systematic portrait of this remarkable flora.

Hundreds of wild flower species in Tibet possess both ornamental and scientific value, forming an important genetic resource for research, conservation, and horticulture. Alpine plants are especially prominent. Three classic alpine groups—Rhododendron, Primula (primrose), and Gentiana (gentian)—reach exceptional diversity here, with Tibet hosting some of the largest concentrations of species in the world. Other genera such as Pedicularis, Meconopsis, and Corydalis further contribute to the region’s global botanical importance.

Tibet’s wild flowers include trees, herbs, and climbing plants, reflecting the great variety of habitats in which they grow. Rare and endemic species such as Paeonia ludlowii, Rhododendron nuttallii, and Cypripedium elegans point to Tibet’s role as a center of plant evolution and differentiation.
