An original article from Royal Geographic Society, 1876, page172-198, with one map, in a very good condition.
A posthumously published article by British diplomat and explorer Augustus Raymond Margary (1846–1875), appearing in the journal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1876. The paper records Margary's overland expedition from Hankow (now Wuhan) through Sichuan and Guizhou to the prefectural capital of Dali in western Yunnan between 1874 and 1875, undertaken on behalf of the British Indian government to scout trade routes from Burma to southwestern China. The article provides detailed observations on river systems, mountain passes, local administration, and ethnic minority groups (including the Bai and Yi), accompanied by one map. Tragically, Margary was killed in February 1875 at Manwyne (present-day Yingjiang County, Yunnan) along the Burmese border, an event known as the "Margary Affair," which led to the Chefoo Convention (1876) between Britain and Qing China. As Margary's final geographical report submitted shortly before his death, this work remains a vital primary source for 19th-century overland exploration, Sino-British diplomatic history, and the historical geography of China's southwestern frontier.
