During the war, much of China was under Japanese occupation. Kunming became the unofficial military capital of Free China, relying heavily on the monthly arrival of 50,000 tons of supplies flown in from India over the Hump. The steady stream of cargo delivered by the Flying Tigers to the Kunming airfield played a crucial role in sustaining China's resistance and keeping the country in the war. This article offers a glimpse into what life in Kunming was like during the turbulent time. 15 pages of illustrations are in natural color photographs.
Ilia Tolstoy was an Australian Lieutenant Colonel during the war. In the spring of 1942, as the Allied situation grew increasingly dire and the Burma Road was lost, he was assigned a mission to cross Tibet from India to China. The goal was to explore potential routes for transporting supplies into China.
Suydam Cutting is the author of Fire Ox and Other Years.
Because of its vital role during the war, the Burma Road attracted worldwide attention. National Geographic magazine published several articles about it, including "China Opens Her Wild West" by Owen Lattimore, "Stilwell Road – Land Route to China" by Nelson Grant Tayman, and "Burma Road, Back Door to China" by Frank Outram & G.E. Fane
