The book is the culmination of four years of intensive fieldwork by scholars Zhaga and Dangzeng Zhaxi. This academic masterpiece offers a systematic exploration of Han-Tibetan and multi-ethnic artistic integration during the era of Yuan Dynasty. The book is from 2020 exhibition at the Tibetan Culture Museum of the China Tibetology Research Center.
Located in Shigatse, Tibet, Shalu Monastery was first established in the Northern Song Dynasty and underwent a massive expansion in the Yuan Dynasty. Its architecture uniquely blends Tibetan fortress-like blockhouses with Central Asian-style glazed hip-and-gable roofs, while its murals vividly depict Central Chinese motifs such as dragon-phoenix patterns, imperial attire, and the Eight Immortals.
The exhibition showcases across six categories: documentary archives, architecture, Buddha statues, thangkas, murals, and ritual implements (including sutra plates and costumes). The volume traces the monastery's historical evolution, analyzes the significance of its Yuan Dynasty glazed tiles, and highlights Butön’s contributions to Tibetan stupas as revealed through the corridor murals of the Eastern Akshobhya Monastery.
